Perhaps it is because the end of the school year is coming, but it feels like time is speeding up. Do you remember back when you were a kid and it felt like it took forever for summer to roll around gain? And the summer seemed to last forever? Almost so long that you were about ready to go back to school when it finally came around again? It seems like spring break and my road trip with my sweet Cobbler dog happened ages ago, but in reality, it was just two weeks ago. For this week’s Photo Friday post, I’m revisiting that trip and heading back to Dauphin Island and the Audubon Bird Sanctuary.
I am not exactly sure what I was expecting of the bird sanctuary, but whatever it was, it far exceeded my expectations. In the space of just a few steps, there was a lake, the beach and sand dunes, and a swamp. All complete with the wild life to go with it. As usual, I wasn’t quite prepared with the right footwear to be tromping around the swampier areas, but as usual, I didn’t let it stop me.
It was right about here that the Cobbie doggie remembered that as a lab, she is a water dog. Perhaps it was the water seeping up through the boardwalk touching her feet that reminded her or maybe it was seeing the local critters frolicking in the water. Whatever it was, I struggled to keep her on the path and dry (spoiler alert – she went home a wet and stinky puppy).
While there were many people there who were scanning the heavens and trees for some of beautiful birds that make their home in LA (Lower Alabama), I spent my time scanning the ground…after Cobbler darted to the end of her leash and snatched a small snake out of the scrub brush lining the path, turning around to look at me so absolutely proud of herself. Good times, Cobbie, good times.
All in all (minus the snake that I convinced Cob to drop), we saw six snakes (only one was over a foot long), a beaver, and a couple of rabbits. Allegedly there are alligators in swamp, but fortunately we didn’t see any of them. Getting the dog to turn loose of a snake was hard enough. I shudder to think what would have happened if she’d grabbed a baby gator by the tail.
In this capture, you can sorta see up the puddled water along the trails. I had a moment where I thought for a minute – this is the point at which you turn around. You’re not in your rubber boots…just turn around. But I didn’t. I contemplated taking my shoes off and just splashing through the water like Cobbie, but then remembered that she had recently had a snake in her mouth. Which means I then decided to just plunge ahead…
…because the beach was waiting. The colors were really that gorgeous.
I’m ready to head back to do some more intense exploring. Unfortunately, my Cobbler doggie won’t be coming with me. She didn’t complain the entire trip, but almost two weeks later, she is just now beginning to feel better. So my girl won’t be hiking with me anymore, but I’d like to make my way back…in appropriate footwear.
I hope you’ve had a good week and that you’ve had the chance to do some great shooting for Photo Friday. I really enjoyed my trip to the Audubon Bird Sanctuary and I didn’t expect to. Tell me about some of your most surprising unexpected finds in the comments!
