I think since our first real “date” – which just happened to be the weekend Sweet Husband came to visit me in Kentucky when I lived there – SH and I have had a relationship with absinthe. When he came to see me that first time in 2008, absinthe was just recently re-introduced to the United States, and of course we had to try it. I’m not sure that we particularly cared for it, but then again, we knew that we were not consuming it correctly – didn’t have the appropriate fountain in my little Louisville apartment to do it right.
It’s funny to me what kinds of preparations we made in order to prepare for our night of absinthe. I distinctly remember hiding SH’s keys because then, as now, he had a tendency to get an idea in his head and run with it. Of course, we didn’t hallucinate because duh – that’s not part of it – but we did fairly intoxicated so perhaps it was a good thing that I hid the keys.
Since that time, we’ve discovered New Orleans’ history with absinthe, and we’ve discovered a place that does absinthe right, although I’m not sure why we haven’t gone to the Old Absinthe House. We first indulged there last year during our anniversary weekend, and we made sure to stop there this past Saturday when we were in town to celebrate our anniversary again. It’s strange that I actually like it because I’m not a big licorice fan, but I do enjoy absinthe. I thought what a better (Almost) Wordless Wednesday post than our absinthe experience.
I am now totally on the hunt for an absinthe fountain because how cool is that thing? And perhaps if we had one at home, we wouldn’t spend $30 on two drinks when we go out. Plus, the house we are looking at has a great bar that could use that kind of decoration right in the middle.
And just a little ambiance for kicks and giggles.
