Weekends are meant for fun. And for relaxing. And for meeting up with friends. And for enjoying. A little bit of work. With that sort of a definition, we have certainly had a weekend.
The weather here on the Gulf Coast has been wonky this weekend, and it’s going to be wonky through the middle of the week. Apparently I just made it home before the worst of the weather hit. There was sleet and freezing rain all the way, though. After I got home and the sun began to go down along with the resulting dropping temperatures, that turned into black ice on the roads People here in the heart of the deepest of the South do not know how to drive in weather like that and road crews do not have the tools to make roads safe. Between the accidents and the pre-emptive road closures, there was no way to leave Mississippi on a major road. The bridge to Louisiana on Interstate 10 was closed because of a 27 car pile-up. On highway 49, there was a 16 car accident. Sweet Husband and I were home, and I was cleaning. A very exciting Friday night.
Saturday we made our way to the Pass Christian Oyster Festival. I guess you could say that the Oyster Festival is a tradition for us now as we went last year and have been looking forward to it since. It was a beautifully clear day. I thought I was going to be OK in my sweater (the heaviest one I own – I got rid of most of them because I can’t use them anymore. But this one. I’ve had it since 1999. I love it, it still looks good, and I’m keeping it. Dammit), a scarf, my denim jacket, jeans, and flipflops. Yes, you read that right, flip flops. And yes, you read earlier that Friday night we had freezing rain. What can I say? My feet hate to be confined.
Anyway. I was wrong. As we stood in line, waiting for New Orleans-style BBQ oysters, Oysters Rockefeller, and Shrimp AuGratin Oysters, the wind started blowing off the water. It got down right frigid. I thought I’d seen Sweet Husband’s breathe, but I couldn’t decide if it was that or smoke from the grills, so I turned and took a deep breath before letting it go. Yup – cold enough to see your breath. And I was wearing flip flops. Whatever.
The oysters were good, though, and so was the deep fried pecan praline king cake.
We ran into a few of Sweet Husband’s friends and enjoyed the time together.
We’ve spent the rest of the weekend resting at the house. I’ve written a little, gotten caught up on some blog reading, found some creative inspiration, almost finished crocheting a baby afghan and sold said afghan without really trying to do so.
That brings me to this upcoming week. We are forecasted to begin to get more nasty wintry weather Monday night, with the peak hitting us Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. I’m predicting if it comes in anywhere near what they’re talking about – we will not have school Wednesday. If that in fact is the case, I’m going to be making my way home to the Coast Tuesday night to spend an extra day off with my sweet family. We shall if it actually works out that way. Best laid plans and all.
As for the rest of my week, I think I’m going to stick with this past week’s intentions.
- Show up
- Pursue my desires
- Feel creative and strong
- Be mindful of my health
What about you? How was your weekend and what will you be mindful of in the coming week?
