On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Shrimp Season started on Wednesday. The season in Louisiana started last week, and by all accounts, we’re expecting that there will be lots of Gulf Coast goodness at lower prices than we’ve paid in the last few years due to lower fuel prices. There’s something about Gulf shrimp. There are times when it is literally sweet to the taste. I look forward to shrimp season all year long, probably because my father-in-law is excellent at boiling them and makes them for me for my birthday every year.
The Gulf Coast has a long and storied history with the seafood industry, as well as a long history with Catholicism. One of the things that many communities look forward to each year with the opening of the fishing seasons are the blessings of the fleets.
Two weekends ago, the community of Pass Christian had their blessing of the fleet as part of their annual Jazz in the Pass festival. We didn’t make it in time for the blessing, so I made my way back the next morning, where I captured the boats that were still decorated…before the rain started to fall.
The owners of this particular boat were actually out when I was there taking pictures, and we chatted for a bit. He told me that his boat took second place – it should have been first because they were clearly more festooned than the other boats in the harbor. He was unwilling to actually take his boat out, though – said it the waters were too rough and he didn’t feel like getting beat to hell just for first place.
Are you a seafood fan? We definitely are – with the shrimp, oysters, and soon blue crab, living on the Gulf Coast is a seafood lover’s dream.
Photo Friday Link-Up
Our link-up is continuing to grow! Thank you to all of you who participate and spread the word! This link-up is truly one of the best parts of my week.
Last week’s most viewed link by a landslide was from Photographing New Zealand. I love looking at Betty’s beach – so different from my own.
Last week’s last added post came from Teresa at Embracing the Spectrum, a blogger I met through SITS Girls. If you missed her post, or any of the other amazing posts from last week, consider taking a moment and checking them out.
As always, I can’t wait to see what y’all will be sharing this week! Let’s get to it, shall we?
