This post is part of The Declaration of You! Blog Lovin’ tour, which I’m participating in along with over 100 other creative bloggers. During the next several weeks, I’ll be posting on various topics that addressed in The Declaration of You!, and I’m so very excited to be a part of this larger community. This week’s theme is “Intention”.
The last few years, I’ve been working more consciously on setting intentions. I’ve always been one to set goals for myself, but I think intentions are a little different. When I think about “intention”, I think about the reason or purpose for the goal. What is it that is motivating the goal? In the past, the motivation was generally just because. Or because I didn’t have anything better to do. And while that works for a little while, it hasn’t always made me happy. I chased things without knowing exactly why I was chasing them. It’s often stressed me out, and to me, that means that it’s time to make a change.
Most recently the intentions I’ve been setting for myself have revolved around how I want to feel…riffing some on The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte, although the idea of how I wanted to feel was brewing before she so eloquently put it into words for me. Mainly I want to feel
Most things that I’m trying to do are tied to those feelings. Is it going to make me happy? Will I feel good or good about myself when I have X? Is it meaningful? Does it make me healthier? If the answer is no, then I think long and hard about whether it’s something in which I need to be engaged or not.
It makes things so much easier. I still have goals, like eventually run a marathon. But those goals are embedded within a new context that I like to call intention. The marathon goal is centered around health, strength, and accomplishment. I’m hoping it leads to more success for me because it’s bigger than just this one thing for which I’m striving.
I’m being more specific about those intentions too. On a regular basis I’m asking the universe to help me feel the way I want to by accomplishing those goals. I’m not quite sure how often the universe comes through for me, but I’m getting better at asking for those things that I want. Eventually I figure the universe is going to respond and show me how to get where I want to be.
Until then, I keep reminding myself and try to act accordingly.
What kinds of intentions do you create for yourself? If you do?
