Like several other areas of the country, here in South Mississippi, we are experiencing sever weather this evening. Unlike other local cities, except for the Zoo Boo, none of the trick or treating activities have been rescheduled. Several friends on Facebook have posted about running through the rain with their children as they go from house to house.
I don’t remember too many trick or treating experiences. There are years of my childhood that are lost with only very vague recollections.
One Halloween that stands out for me was the one that I decided to break up with my boyfriend. I was living with him & I had sort of gotten involved with someone else. I had gone to a Halloween party and a movie with this other guy, kissed him once. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know if I was going to stay with Chris. I didn’t know if I was going to come clean. I didn’t know if I was going to keep it to myself.
His family always did a big to-do for Halloween. The yard was decorated, there was dry ice & a fog machine & a sound system. Family members were costumed and did their damnedest to give all small visitors a scare. That Halloween, his mother sat in the front yard dressed as a witch. She asked me what was wrong because she knew something was.
& it all came tumbling out.
Her response, “Maybe what Chris doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”
Not at all what I expected to hear from his mother.
I didn’t take her advice. I found I couldn’t handle the burden of the dishonesty. I moved out and we broke up.
No tricks or treats but it turned out to be a great Halloween.
How about you? What is one of your Halloween memories?
