This week’s (Almost) Wordless Wednesday takes us back to Missouri and the Billings Community Fair. I took a ton of photos while we were there, wandering around, but not all of them fit neatly into either of the other posts that I’ve done about the fair. Still fun photos, though.
I have always wondered about the carnys – the folks who run away to join the circus, so to speak. What leads them to travel around the country, always on the move, doing work that is incredibly difficult at times and at other times is incredibly tedious. I suppose I can see the ideas of freedom and the ability to see the rest of the country – moving in and out of communities and seeing some of the most wonderful and strange places.
When I look a little more closely at them, though, I wonder at what point the notions of freedom bump up against having some of our most basic needs met. I look at them and see lives that are spent living hard.
The young woman who was working this particular midway game beckoned us over, but I just wanted a photo. As she talked to us, I notice that the majority of her teeth were missing and that her skin was a mess. When I say she was young, I’d say early 20s, if not late teens. While it’s stereotypical, I wondered about meth addiction. If that is what happened to her teeth and her skin.
It all kinda made me want to grab a recorder and my camera and do a series of photos and stories ala The Hidden South. I don’t know if I’m that brave, but I know there are a few carnivals that will be making their way through the Coast. Perhaps I’ll screw up my courage between now and then.
Where I’m linking up.
