This past weekend, I got to spend some time with my girlfriends. We had some drinks, ate some snacks, and then went to a local Christmas lights display. The Lewis Lights are put on by two older ladies, and for many families in South Mississippi, an annual trip to the Lewis Lights is a tradition not to be missed. I know that I’ve been probably five or six times, and for several of those trips, I wasn’t a full-time resident of the state of Mississippi! While most people go to the Lewis Lights for the decorations, this (Almost) Wordless Wednesday post features a different kind of decoration.
It is camellia season in the South. Blooming from late October/early November into January, the beautiful camellias remind us that while the earth is slowly (in our case) putting herself to bed for a winter’s sleep, spring will come again soon, bringing with her the promise of beauty and growth.
While my girlfriends were Oooing and Awwwing over the lights – reminiscing about Scooby Doo or the Bernstein Bears or the TeleTubbies – once I spotted the camellias and saw them illuminated by the Christmas lights, that is where my attention went and remained. (Sorry girls!)
The Lewis’s had, as near as I could tell, two colors of camellias – white ones and pink ones. Here in our backyard at Gumbo Acre South, I’ve been delighted to find that we have a red camellia bush…which reminds me that I need to get out and take a few pictures of it as well (ours, of course, won’t be illuminated by Christmas lights. Loses a little of its magic, I think).
I can’t remember if it works this way with our camellia bush or any of the other camellias that I’ve ever seen, but at least at the Lewis Lights, when the camellias dropped their blossoms, they dropped them perfectly on the ground – fully formed blooms just resting there, almost like they were placed in that very spot.
The camellias are certainly gorgeous, and I appreciate my girlfriends being patient with me as I chased photos and angles.
What’s blooming where you are? I know my Australian friends are heading into summer so they have incredible things blooming right now! But what about the rest of you? Anything reminding you of regeneration in the heart of winter?
*All photos taken with my iPhone 6 and edited with the Camera+ & Little Moments app. Apologies if you received a version of this that was all huge photos with no text. I did some editing of the post and then put it in draft status so I could come back and finish it up…but WordPress published it without the edits. Very strange.
