Kat McNally gives us the following for Reverb13 today:
The phrase “It takes a village” is often bandied about, in reference to child-rearing, running a business, just about everything. But if you’re anything like me, you may not be a natural born collaborator.
In 2014, how could you explore what community means to you?
It might be a question of sharing the load, asking for help or signing on someone with a complementary skill set. Or it could be about a creative collaboration that pushes you to explore new ideas and media.
Where might the alchemy be?
I am not a natural born collaborator. I’m not exactly sure what it is – maybe the fact that I’ve lived on my own for so long or perhaps because I’ve been disappointed so many times. But working with others is difficult.
But my “word” for 2013 was “connection”. I know that even though I’m not particularly good at it, I need that sense of connection. Particularly when it comes to my writing or to my photography. I’ve been longing for a sense of community. I’m not sure exactly where I’m going to find either of those in specific.
I know I’m starting (I think) to create that online, and perhaps there are some leads there. I’ve joined a few groups, found a few folks that I think might be helpful. As I begin to think about it, it feels a bit like my word for 2014 might be trying to make itself known. I’m not sure exactly what it is yet – I’ve been listening but it’s not completely clear yet. I do know that I can’t do this on my own, and that in order to get where I think I want to be, there’s going to have to be a lot of support and help. I’ve got it from friends and family; I just need to seek it out from the creatives that can give me the support and guidance I need.
