Middle Mosaic-Linda Reif

author of Seeking Diversity

Roadmap to success. What keeps us in the classroom? For her it’s a combination of the laughter and innocence that the students in our classes possess and give to us.

What keeps kids writing? Seeing teachers reading and writing with their students helps to keeps students writing. When they know that you care and that it matters or is important to you, they will do it. They begin to see importance for themselves. When we apprentice our students to books, help them make connections to what they’re seeing/hearing/feeling in the world, we give students POWER.

Our student apprentices are forming relationships with authors when we read aloud to them from good books.

When we ask students to write for real purposes and real audiences, we are giving them an opportunity to create relevance for themselves.

It’s important to sit and talk with students, to listen to what they have to say about their writing: what did you do well? what did you have questions about? here’s a suggestion I have for you.

Some questions to think about: In our classrooms, are we heading in the right directions? Is our instruction designed to help students continue to love to read and write? If they do not already have that love, is our instruction designed to help them develop that love of reading and writing? Even with the right instruction, how do we keep students moving in the right direction?
